Life can be unpredictable, much like a turbulent flight. We often plan meticulously, but sometimes, unexpected bumps force us to reflect on what truly matters. This is a story about finding gratitude and meaning amidst the uncontrollable, inspired by a recent flight that was both luxurious and turbulent.
Finding Clarity in Turbulence
Ever since I read the book “Die with Zero” last year, my perspective on life has changed dramatically. I’ve started making different choices about how I spend my money and how I view the next chapter of my life. One of those choices was flying business class for the first time with my husband from San Francisco to Rome via Lisbon.
Our flight started out great and luxurious and then became highly turbulent, with about four hours of rough air during the ten-hour journey. Whenever there’s turbulence on a flight, I can’t help but wonder, “What if this is it? What if I died in a plane crash?”
It’s not meant to be dramatic; it’s just how I cope with the fear of flying. Instead of worrying, I use the time to reflect on my life. This time, I realized how thankful I am that my husband and I are finally enjoying our hard-earned money by flying business class for the first time. I’m also grateful for the simple, yet fulfilling, life we share with our daughters. Interestingly, the turbulence actually helped me sleep better, as it felt like being rocked to sleep on a train.
Living with No Regrets
I’m not writing this to brag about our first business class experience. Instead, I want to challenge you with a thought: If you died tomorrow, at least you’ve experienced “fill in the blank.” Does this thought make you feel grateful for living your best life, or does it stir up regrets about things you wish you had done?
I encourage you to do this exercise for yourself to discover what you truly want and whether you’re moving toward it or hiding from it because you think it’s too late. So grab a glass of wine, sit at your favorite spot at home or in a cafe, and think about this thought above.
Embracing Life’s Journey
The good news is that the turbulence passed, as it always does, and I didn’t die. And you are still here too. Whatever surfaced for you while reading this, dive deeper into it, even if it makes you uncomfortable, especially if it brings up regrets. You’re still alive and have the opportunity to live your best life now. Go and explore what that means while you still have the chance.
Seizing the Moment
Life is full of turbulence, both literal and figurative. But instead of fearing it, use it as a reminder to reflect, be grateful, and pursue the life you truly want. After all, if you can look back and say, “At least I’ve experienced [your answer],” you’ll know you’re on the right path.
Take the time to identify what experiences or achievements you would fill in the blank with and make them a priority. Whether it’s traveling to a dream destination, spending more quality time with loved ones, or pursuing a long-held passion, make a plan to incorporate these into your life.
Remember, it’s never too late to start living the life you’ve always wanted. Embrace the turbulence and let it guide you towards a more fulfilling and intentional journey.
Best wishes to you living your best life starting today.
