Our Pricey Yet Priceless Night at Aulani

I recently made a decision that had me questioning my own sanity for a moment—a lavish $921 for a single night’s stay at a hotel. It took several attempts to muster the conviction to make this reservation, but looking back, I am glad I took the plunge. This wasn’t just any hotel stay; it was a deliberate step in my new philosophy of embracing the present rather than perpetually waiting for the “right time.”

A Night at Aulani

AulaniThe steep expense was for a garden room at Aulani, the Disney Resort in Oahu, accommodating four of us—myself, my husband, and our two children. This wasn’t an all-inclusive deal; it only covered our stay in a room with one king bed and a queen sofa bed, with all meals and additional activities costing extra. Yes, during the off-peak season, a night at Aulani might range between $500 and $600, but since we were there during spring break, the prices had soared.

The Context of Our Splurge

We were already in Oahu for spring break last week visiting hubby’s cousin in Kapolei, a mere 12 minutes away from the resort. Aulani does not offer day passes, so booking a room was our only ticket to experience the resort. This strategy also gave us access to the resort’s facilities for two full days. After several days of back-and-forth discussions, my husband and I decided to go for it. It was the first time we had ever spent so much on a single night’s accommodation, but given our financial stability, it felt justifiable.

Why This Splurge Felt Justified

The true value of this extravagant expense became clear through the precious memories we created with our children. My younger one couldn’t get enough of the waterslides and the lazy river. We all delightedaulani stitch in the unique shave ice topped with mouse ears, and the kids loved their breakfast filled with Mickey Mouse waffles. They also enjoyed learning to draw beloved Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, and Stitch.

As my kids are now 12 and nearly 16, I’m acutely aware that opportunities for family trips to places like Disney might be dwindling. This experience not only satisfied our curiosity but also created memories that we’ll cherish for a lifetime. While I don’t foresee us returning for another stay—it was, in essence, a once-in-a-lifetime experience—it highlighted the importance of seizing the moment and enjoying life without delay.

A Reflection for You

I share this story not just to recount our little adventure, but to perhaps inspire a similar reflection in your own life. Are there experiences or joys you are postponing in anticipation of a more “appropriate” future time? My takeaway from this indulgence is clear: the right time to create memories and enjoy life is now. What about you? Have you considered giving yourself permission to indulge a bit more in the present?

Best wishes to you to a fulfilling life
