Negotiation Skills

“Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.” – John F. Kennedy

Don’t bargain yourself down before you get to the table.” – Carol Frohlinger

It’s a well-known proposition that you know who’s going to win a negotiation; it’s he who pauses the longest.” – Robert Court

Negotiations is an art and a science.  Your objectives are three folds

  1. Don’t chicken out.  Make sure you push yourself to negotiate (e.g., better  job offer, promotion, new job challenges, work life balance etc..)
  2. Take time to understand the other sides’ perspective.  This will prepare you for what they may say, so you can prepare your counter argument before hand.
  3. Strive for a win-win situation.  Most negotiations are with people with whom you need to have a long term relationship (e.g., your current or future boss).  So figure out how to communicate what you want and how that benefits them as well as you.

There are many opportunities to negotiate at work.  Not only can you negotiate during major career milestones like job offer, promotion, etc.., you can also negotiate throughout your job (e.g, work from home one day a week, less travel,  or say no to a new assignment.)  Look out for all these opportunities and practice!   You won’t get what you want each time.  With practice, however, you will increase your odds significantly.
